Back in 1975, the Causeway Kittiwake was launched from the boatbuilding sheds at Coleraine Marina Boatyard. She was one of three specially built tourism fishing boats, each proudly carrying the Causeway prefix followed by a seabird name — Causeway Puffin, Causeway Gannet, and Causeway Kittiwake.
Fast forward to 2025, and while the designs have evolved, the spirit lives on. We’ve kept the signature colour scheme and the Causeway name, but today our fleet carries a different theme: Causeway Lass, Causeway Girl, Causeway Lady, and soon a brand new build — Causeway Maid.
The sad part of this story is that the Coleraine boatyard, once a hub of craftsmanship and opportunity, now sits abandoned despite being in public ownership. It should be a place alive with activity, providing valuable marine services and well-paid jobs for the community. Instead, it waits in uncertainty for its fate.
Honouring the past, celebrating the present, and hoping for a brighter future for our maritime heritage here on the Causeway Coast.
