A Dozen Dolphins in the Bow Wave: An Extraordinary Day on the Causeway Coast

Some days on the water are just something else. This was one of them.

Our skipper Adam was out aboard Causeway Lass when a pod of around a dozen dolphins decided to join them — riding the bow wave, darting beneath the hull, and putting on a display that stopped everyone on deck in their tracks. With the summer sea running crystal clear, you could watch every movement beneath the surface. Adam, filming from the bow, was about as close to a wild dolphin as anyone in Europe that afternoon.

Why Dolphins Love the Causeway Coast

Common dolphins and bottlenose dolphins are regular visitors to the waters off Northern Ireland’s North Coast, drawn in by the rich feeding grounds and strong tidal currents that run along this stretch of coastline. The waters between Portrush, the Giant’s Causeway, and Rathlin Island are some of the most productive marine habitats in Ireland, which is why you’re more likely to encounter wildlife out here than almost anywhere else on the island.

Bow-riding is one of the most spectacular behaviours dolphins display — they use the pressure wave created by a moving vessel to surf for free, conserving energy while seemingly having the time of their lives. It’s a behaviour that tells you a lot about how relaxed and healthy these animals are. They chose to come to us — and that’s always the best kind of encounter.

Responsible Wildlife Watching on the Water

At Causeway Boats, we take our responsibility to the marine environment seriously. When dolphins approach the boat on their own terms, as they did here, it’s a privilege — and one we never take for granted. We don’t chase or pursue wildlife, and we always give animals the space to move away freely. Moments like this one, where the dolphins are clearly in control and thoroughly unbothered, are what responsible wildlife watching looks like.

Could You See Dolphins on a Causeway Boats Trip?

Honestly? Yes — though as with all wildlife, nothing is guaranteed, and that’s part of what makes it so special. Dolphin sightings are most common during the summer months when calmer seas and warmer water bring them closer inshore, but we’ve had encounters in every season. The key is simply being out on the water, in the right place, with people who know it well.

Whether you’re booking a sightseeing trip along the Causeway coastline or a private charter for a special occasion, every trip with us is a chance to see the North Coast at its finest — and days like this remind us that the sea always has something up its sleeve.
